Spray Tanning is a form of self-tanning (or sunless tanning) where a fine mist is sprayed onto your body. This mist has an ingredient in it called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a simple sugar that interacts with your own skin's chemistry to allow it to tan, or bronze. DHA is not a dye– rather it causes a chemical reaction with the nitrogen-containing amino acids on the top, dead layer of your skin. This reaction produces melanoidin molecules, relatives of the skin pigment melanin that range in color from yellowish to brown, which allows the skin to tan. Some amino acids make for darker melanoidins than others.

 

In general, your spray tan will last around a week (5 to 10 days) but it will start to gradually fade before this time. This is because the skin will naturally continue to regenerate itself and old skin cells will be sloughed away to reveal paler skin beneath.
